Harry Kane scored his second hat-trick of the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign over the weekend as Bayern Munich romped to a 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart. The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has eight goals and four assists in just 594 minutes this term.
Despite his emphatic start to the season, the England skipper is currently trailing in the race for the Bundesliga Golden Boot.
He’s one goal shy of Omar Marmoush.
The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has used his impressive 2023/24 campaign, his debut one with Die Adler, as a catapult to success for this season. The 25-year-old leads the way for goals in the German top-flight with nine. He’s well on course to eclipse his career-high 12 goals. The Egypt international is also joint-top for assists (four) as well as joint-top for Big Chances Created (six). He's opened the scoring on three occasions and twice netted the equaliser. He's also matched his haul of four Man of the Match awards from last season.
Marmoush has netted in games against last season’s champions Bayer Leverkusen and the team many are tipping to reclaim their crown this time around, Bayern Munich. In fact, he ran riot against Vincent Kompany’s men before the international break.
The Eintracht Frankfurt number seven scored twice and assisted another in the 3-3 draw with Bayern. The 6ft versatile forward bossed the usually dominant Dayot Upamecano. He was even singled out for praise by Kompany during the post-match press conference.
“Marmoush is a player who’s only going to get better with time. What he did for [Hugo] Ekitike’s goal is not normal. To push past Upa [Dayot Upamecano] with strength, no one did that before for the whole season. And then to make the right decision at the end, the quality in his strike, and the speed. Sometimes he looks quite relaxed, then when he gets going, he’s really fast.”
His form since the switch to the Deutsche Bank Park has been nothing short of spectacular. Yet nobody gave that particular transfer a second look when it was announced. Marmoush had done ok in his final season with Wolfsburg, scoring five goals in the Bundesliga.
Prior to that, his loan stint with FC St Pauli in the German second tier had been the highlight of his career. His season on loan with VfB Stuttgart wasn’t bad but a return of three goals in 21 outings wasn’t anything to take note of.
He moved on a free transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2023 with the 2021/22 Europa League champions looking to replace Kolo Muani and Jesper Lindstrom. The former made the move to Paris Saint Germain while the latter was snapped up by Napoli.
The expectation was that Marmoush would take over from Lindstrom, but he actually went on to fill the void left by Muani.
“When Jesper Lindström left for Napoli, it looked as if Marmoush would be his replacement, but suddenly Kolo Muani was also gone,” said Christopher Michel, the leading Eintracht Frankfurt journalist for German outlet Fussball News.
“Coach Dino Toppmo-ller recognised Marmoush’s qualities and spoke to him a lot and worked on his finishing. Toppmöller explained something important to him: he should have a plan for his finishes. Now, he is very intelligent and precise and uses his inside foot. As a result, Marmoush quickly became a top scorer and a crowd favourite – he took a big step forward in Frankfurt.”
On current form, he’s one of the best players in the world with a Football Critic rating of 94.
And now Marmoush looks set to follow a path trodden by the likes of Muani, Seb Haller, Luka Jovic and Andre Silva. These forwards all impressed for Eintracht Frankfurt before getting a big-money move elsewhere.
Clubs are already scrambling to sign the 34-cap international. Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Spurs are just four of the teams reportedly keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential summer move. Eintracht Frankfurt are looking to tie him down to a new deal in the hope they’re able to extract maximum profit when he does depart. With the free-scoring forward showing that last season wasn’t a fluke, interest in him is only going to increase, especially if he continues to terrorise the best teams in the Bundesliga.
Marmoush was once viewed as someone who wouldn’t make it in the German top flight. Now he’s viewed as one of the best in the league and the hype is warranted.
