Bologna, winless in Serie A this season, will host Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in their opening Champions League fixture. As Bologna make their return to Europe's top competition after a long absence, Shakhtar will aim to improve their record in Italy, where they have historically struggled.

Bologna Recent Form

Bologna have had a disappointing start to the season under new coach Vincenzo Italiano. They are still searching for their first win, having recorded two draws and a loss in their opening Serie A matches.

Their most recent outing saw them come from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Como, but concerns about their form remain.

Injury and Team News

Bologna will be without key players like Oussama El Azzouzi and Nicolo Cambiaghi, both sidelined with long-term knee injuries.

Scottish midfielder Lewis Ferguson is also recovering from an ACL injury. On a positive note, Emil Holm and Martin Erlic have returned from injury, while Riccardo Orsolini will continue to lead the attack.

Last Bologna Lineup

Here is how Bologna lined up for their last match:

Shakhtar Donetsk Recent Form

Shakhtar have been inconsistent this season, with three wins and two losses in their last five matches. They are coming off a high-scoring 5-2 win over Karpaty Lviv in the Ukrainian Premier League, a match where Artem Bondarenko netted a hat-trick.

Despite their domestic success, Shakhtar have often struggled in Europe, especially away from home.

Injury and Team News

Shakhtar are expected to field a strong squad, with Danylo Sikan, who scored four goals in last season's Champions League, leading the attack.

Marlon Gomes has recently returned from a hamstring injury, and the team will rely on Georgiy Sudakov, who was their top creator in last season’s group stage.

Last Shakhtar Lineup

Here is how Shakhtar lined up for their last match:

Riznyk; Konoplya, Franjic, Bondar, Pedrinho; Bondarenko, Kyrskiv, Sudakov; Zubkov, Sikan, Kevin

Bologna Player to Watch

Riccardo Orsolini will be a key player for Bologna. The Italian winger has started the season in good form and will need to provide creativity and goals for his side to stand a chance.

Shakhtar Donetsk Player to Watch

Georgiy Sudakov is crucial for Shakhtar, as he led the team in chance creation last season. His midfield playmaking could unlock Bologna’s defence.

Prediction

Bologna's shaky form and Shakhtar’s struggles on the road suggest a tight contest. A 2-2 draw seems a likely outcome as both sides look to avoid defeat in their opening group match.

Betting Tips

Tip 1

Both teams to score – Neither defence has been solid this season, making a high-scoring match likely.

Tip 2

Over 2.5 goals – With attacking talent on both sides, expect a goal-heavy game.

Tip 3

Draw – Bologna’s home advantage might help them avoid defeat, but Shakhtar’s experience could earn them a point.
