The Main Moscow Derby is contested between CSKA Moscow and Spartak Moscow. Each fixture between the two is an occasion, with fans aiming to outdo each other with their displays during the match. Spartak fans refer to their counterparts as ‘myaso’ (meat), while CSKA fans refer to them as ‘koni’ (horses). A starting point from the rivalry came with how both clubs were established. CSKA were formed as the club of the Russian military, hence their nickname, ‘the Army Men’, while Spartak were formed by trade unionists in 1922, eventually becoming known as 'The People’s Club’. Whenever the Main Moscow Derby takes place, there will usually be over a thousand police officers in attendance in and around the host stadium in an attempt to curtail the organised violence.
