In terms of the entirety of African football, it doesn't get much bigger than the Cairo Derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek. The fixture was a century old in 2017 and both have dominated the Egyptian game to such an extent that each meeting between the sides is virtually a title decider. The fixture regularly captures the imagination of the wider Middle East region, and with constant rumours of bribery and corruption, there has been requests to Fifa for foreign referees to police the fixture to ensure impartiality. In recent years an explosion of interest in the concept of ultras, or extreme fandom, has increased violence, and the associated police presence, around each event.
