Are Man Utd too reliant on Bruno Fernandes? Scholes gives his opinion

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Bruno Fernandes is a better offensive player than he ever was.

Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes has 14 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season, but Paul Scholes does not feel that the Red Devils lean too heavily upon him.

The Portugal international playmaker is often considered to be the player who makes United tick and has involvement in 46% of their Premier League goals this term.

Scholes has argued, though, that this is simply part and parcel of the role Bruno performs in the team.

“Are we too reliant on him? No I don't think so. That is his role in the team. You have to remember United paid a lot of money for this type of player,” he told the club’s official website.

“He is a player whose job it is to create goals and score goals. Now he is doing that better than we ever imagined. Other players need to step up now.”

Scholes pointed to Sunday’s 1-1 draw against West Brom as an example of a game in which Fernandes created something from nothing for his side.

“His record is sensational really and he was actually having a bad game,” the former England man said. “He was giving the ball away an awful lot, which he does in games anyway because he plays with that element of risk and as a United midfielder you should always have that.

“But he is capable of creating goals and creating special moments in games, and Sunday was no different.”

Meanwhile, Scholes says that Bruno is a more able offensive player than he was.

“He is different to me. I played in that No.10 position for a while but I was never as creative or scored as many goals as he has in that position,” he continued.

“Obviously I played in a deeper role than he is, but you have to look at his numbers and what he is doing is sensational. We just need to get a team around him that can push on to win the league.”

Man Utd are currently second in the Premier League but trail leaders Manchester City by seven points and have played a game more.
