Aston Villa hosted Everton in a fantastic Premier League encounter this evening, where the Toffees once again let a two-goal lead slip to lose 3-2. After taking control in the first half, Everton looked set for a crucial win that they desperately needed to kickstart their season. However, Aston Villa mounted a strong comeback, spearheaded by Ollie Watkins and capped off by Jhon Durán's wonderstrike.

Everton's collapse from a winning position raises serious questions about their defence and frailties under a manager like Sean Dyche whose teams are usually built on being steady at the back.

Aston Villa showcased resilience and determination to secure all three points at Villa Park. The visitors will be frustrated, as this is not the first time they’ve failed to protect a commanding lead after their collapse against Bournemouth just before the International break.

Aston Villa Player Ratings

Aston Villa's performance was a mixed bag in the first half, but they dominated the second half with impressive energy and a clinical edge. Ollie Watkins was the standout performer, securing a brace and driving his team forward with relentless pressure. Pau Torres was solid at the back, and Lucas Digne contributed both defensively and in attack with a consistent performance.

In midfield, Youri Tielemans was effective at distributing the ball and breaking up Everton's play, while Jhon Durán's late goal ensured Villa capitalised on their momentum. Overall, the Villa players showed their fighting spirit, overturning a deficit and securing a vital home win.

Everton Player Ratings

Everton's strong first-half showing was undone by a series of defensive lapses and an inability to control the game when it mattered. Dwight McNeil was Everton's brightest spark, contributing with a goal and offering creativity going forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin added another, showing his quality with a well-taken finish.

However, defensively, the Toffees were poor. Michael Keane and James Tarkowski struggled to deal with Villa's pace and movement, and veteran Ashley Young had a tough time keeping up with Villa’s wide players. Jordan Pickford made a few decent saves but couldn’t prevent the goals.

Here are the player ratings for Everton:
