Cristiano Ronaldo 'isn't missed in La Liga'

Javier Tebas believes that Spain's top flight isn't suffering from the loss of CR7 and that Italy hasn't benefitted, either

La Liga president Javier Tebas claims that the league hasn't suffered since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus two years ago.

Ronaldo joined Juve from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 for a fee believed to be in the region of €100m (£88m) after nine years in Spain.

The transfer saw the end of the Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi duels, at least domestically, and many felt that La Liga would suffer without one of its biggest names.

However Tebas shot down this belief in an interview with Spanish daily Marca.

When asked whether the potential departures of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramous would affect the La Liga brand, Tebas replied: "Obviously, I don’t want them to leave La Liga, but if that were to happen, we’d all have to give more to take up the slack,” he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo left, as some haters reminded me on Twitter. I can assure you that nothing has changed for us. To be honest, I don’t think Serie A has improved much either, they barely noticed his arrival.

“Neymar went to PSG, but Ligue 1 is still only Ligue 1. The La Liga brand and the big clubs that take part are above any individual player, no matter how talented.”

Ronaldo has scored 71 goals in 94 games in all competitions for the Bianconeri since his arrival in Italy. He's won two league titles and a single Italian Super Cup.

La Liga's current TV rights contract, combining both domestic and international, is worth close to €2bn a season.

Serie A's latest TV deal is worth an estimated €1.3bn a season.
