Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone considers England defender Kieran Trippier's 10-week ban for betting related offences "unfair" and saying it only benefits the FA.

The former Tottenham player was banned for 10 weeks last week after being found guilty of four breaches of the FA's betting rules.

He is poised to miss 13 matches, including a Champions League clash with Chelsea, in what is a global ban. However, he will not miss any international fixtures, which has angered Simeone.

The charges are dated back to his move to the Spanish capital in July 2019. Although these have yet to be revealed, it is thought that friends of Tripper's made bets on his move to Atletico.

Trippier himself denies betting on the move or advising friends to gamble on his transfer.

Simeone, speaking in his press conference ahead of Atletico's last game of 2020 - at home to Getafe - the Argentine hit out at the situation.

"This week it seems like a month has passed," said Simeone. "We found out about Trippier, which I consider unfair.

“We think it’s unfair and we hope it can be revised because of the damage done to Atletico.

“Atletico obviously have absolutely nothing to do with this situation so we hope it can be re-assessed in some way, because while the FA benefits from this, Atletico is harmed by it and has nothing to do with it.

“But the circumstances are what they are and we’ll have to live with it.”

As well as missing 13 matches, the right-back is not even allowed into the Metropolitano Stadium or to train with the team for the next 10 weeks.

Trippier, who has also been fined £70,000 by the FA, signed for Atletico in the summer of 2019 for around £20m. He has made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish side.
