The Dutch FA have admitted that the 2019/20 Eredivisie season now cannot be ended after the government extended a ban on public gatherings until 1 September.
Some leagues across Europe are speculating on when they will be able to return to action, such as the German Bundesliga and the Swedish Allsvenskan, who are both looking at a comeback within the next two months.
But a statement from the Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte, placed a blanket ban on all events, including professional football matches, music festivals and other events, for a further three months.
The KNVB subsequently announced: "No professional football can be played, even without an audience, until September 1. As a result, the board of professional football intends not to continue playing the 2019-20 league.
“Based on the government’s decision today, the KNVB will consult with Uefa after which a decision will be confirmed. On Friday, the clubs and other parties involved will meet to discuss the consequences.”
A meeting is expected to take place on Friday to assess what will happen with the 2019/20 season: whether prizes will be handed out and titles decided or the season will be rendered null and void.
Given Ajax and AZ are level on the same number of points at the top of the table it appears extremely difficult to envisage a situation where the title will be decided on a technicality.
It will also be discussed at the meeting whether player stats for the season will be rendered null and void or will be counted in a player's career figures.
