Neymar: Next year, I want to play with Messi

The Brazilian dropped a bombshell after his performance against Manchester United for PSG - but where will he team with the Argentine?

Neymar has dropped a huge transfer statement by claiming that he wants to play alongside Lionel Messi next year.

The Brazilian enjoyed a hugely fruitful spell alongside Messi at Barcelona before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Barcelona made every effort to bring Neymar back to Camp Nou in the summer of 2019 but the deal couldn't be completed from a financial perspective, much to the frustration of both players.

Neymar has made no secret of his desire to team with Messi again, and after PSG defeated Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford to keep their Champions League dreams alive, he said that it could happen as soon as next year.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, he said: "What I would most like is to return to playing with Messi. Next year we have to do it."

Neymar and Messi: Which club?

But the big question is where exactly Neymar expects this reunion to happen.

Messi's contract at Barcelona expires next summer and given the club's dire financial situation and the 33-year-old's clear displeasure at the current situation, he seems as good as ready to begin negotiations with another club in January.

The front runner in that situation is thought to be Manchester City, where Messi would again team up with Pep Guardiola, who coached him through the most thrilling spell of his career. But could City make a move for not one, but both of these icons at the same time?

Given Barcelona's dire situation in which debt must be shed before any significant transfer business can be done, it appears highly unlikely that they could put together a package to not only keep Messi, but entice Neymar too.

Which leaves PSG. With Kylian Mbappe looking like he is not going to sign a new deal in the French capital and with Real Madrid circling, there's every chance that the World Cup winner will not be in Ligue 1 next summer.

In that case, Messi may look to become the most lucrative free agent in history and team up with his friend once more.

But it's for sure that Neymar's comments will have speculation rife as to which clubs could put together a deal to bring to modern icons into the one side once again.
