Uefa's meeting today (17 March) has thrown up some short-term solutions to the coronavirus crisis, as the football calendar battles against itself to fit in its numerous commitments.
Uefa are keen to maintain a uniform approach to the return of domestic competitions but are also acutely aware that the spread of the disease is at different stages in each country and so setting a definitive beginning or end day is extremely difficult.
But following today's meeting, that is what has been proposed so far.
EURO 2020 IS NOW EURO 2021
In news that was always inevitable, Uefa have taken the decision to move their tournament back a year to allow domestic competitions time to finish their seasons.
It seems that this move is a clear indication from Uefa that they will do whatever possible to ensure that all tournaments that have been suspended will be allowed to finish.
EURO 2020 PLAY-OFFS MOVED TO JUNE
The Euro 2020 play-offs scheduled for the end of March have now been provisionally moved to June, subject to a review of the situation at the time.
COPA AMERICA DELAYED UNTIL 2021
Following on from Uefa's decision, Conmebol immediately announced that they would follow suit and the competition would take place at exactly the same time as Euro 2021, from 11 June until 11 July.
EUROPEANS LEAGUES COMPLETE BY 30 JUNE?
Despite some suggestions that Uefa had set a date at the end of June for the Champions League final, at the moment they just cannot commit to any kind of arbitrary moment in the calendar.
But in a statement released by Uefa later in the afternoon, it was claimed that European leagues have agreed to a June 30 deadline to complete all domestic competition.
It remains to be seen how the clubs can concur with such a date considering the different levels of coronavirus infection in each country, but, for now, this is the date that European leagues will strive to complete their seasons before.
In addition, a revised plan is being drawn up for European qualification for 2020/21, with it looking unlikely that those matches will be able to take place as originally planned.
