Dutch legend Marco van Basten says Donny van de Beek shouldn't have joined Manchester United.

The midfielder starred for Ajax over the past few seasons and was part of the team that reached the semi-final of the Champions League in 2019.

While the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt moved on to pastures new, he stayed on for another campaign before eventually leaving a summer later, with Old Trafford the destination.

However, he has barely played under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having notched up just 59 minutes in the Premier League so far.

Van Basten reckons the 23-year-old made a mistake in joining a club where he wouldn't be guaranteed first team football.

"Donny shouldn't have gone to United," Van Basten told Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport.

"When you're a good player you want to play every week.

"It's really bad for a player like Donny to play six or seven games this year. That's shocking for your rhythm.

"I know he's earning loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club. Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club.

Van Basten is of the opinion that Van de Beek should have stayed patient to sign for someone else, and that he fears for his career.

"Is it about a five-year contract that he can sign? No, that's bullshit. Then you shouldn't go to Manchester United, but wait with it or for another club.

"You have to want to play football every week."

Van de Beek has been kept out of the side by Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and more recently Fred and Scott McTominay.
