The Madrid Derby refers to the main encounter each season between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid – two hugely successful teams domestically and in Europe. During the early Francoist era, Atletico were the team of the airforce and more favoured by the regime, but as Real Madrid began making a mark in the European Cup they became the more favoured side, with the government hoping to monetise their success. Atletico Madrid responded with chants of "El equipo del gobierno, la verguenza del país" (the team of the government, the shame of the country) towards Real Madrid, who were now well and truly backed by the capital. Atletico’s working-class background is summed up by their nickname, Los Colchoneros – the Mattress Makers, while Real Madrid attract more upper class supporters. In more recent years, the rivalry between Atletico and Real has moved up a level as they have faced each other in numerous European clashes, including two Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016. The overall head-to-head is hugely in favour of Los Blancos.
