It could be argued that England are the perennial underachievers in international football. They, along with rivals Scotland, are the two oldest professional national teams and contested the first international match in 1872. Yet despite being the pioneering country of the game, they only have one major trophy on record, the 1966 World Cup which was contested in England. Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst drove the Three Lions to glory. After a difficult spell in the 1970s, where they failed to qualify for successive World Cups, the 1986 World Cup was seen as an opportunity for Bobby Robson's side to seriously compete. Gary Lineker's Golden Shoe-winning display fired them to the quarter-finals, but they exited courtesy of Argentina, Diego Maradona, and two of the most infamous goals ever scored, the 'Hand of God’ and the ‘Goal of the Century’. Italia ’90 again appeared promising but the semi-final and Germany would prove to be their ceiling, as it would be in Euro ‘96 on home soil six years later. After the millennnium a new generation emerged with the likes of David Beckham, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand forming a formidable side. But despite their talents they have failed to progress past numerous quarter-final exits, with better success coming more recently as the crop featuring the likes of Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli reached the semi of the 2018 World Cup in France. Domestically, England boasts the Premier League which is the most lucrative and watched top-level league in the world. Manchester United have dominated over the years, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City threatening their rule at various periods.
